Untreated abscess causes life-threatening meningitis

A schoolgirl becomes seriously ill after an untreated abscess lands her in intensive care

Recently, 16 year old Fiona was happily talking with her friends, walking to class, when she suddenly felt extremely ill. After being rushed to hospital, doctors were troubled by her condition; unable to figure out what was causing her sickness.

After running many tests, doctors finally diagnosed her with meningitis; a bacterial infection that directly affects the brain and spinal cord.

Another connection between the mouth and the body?

The infection was traced back to an abscess that had not been treated in Fiona’s gums. This led to a bacterial infection and over time the bacteria assimilated to her bloodstream, finally coming to rest in her spinal cord and around her brain, causing meningitis.
