Poor Dental Health Linked to Dementia

Study finds prominent connection between oral and mental health

The University of California has recently discovered a link between poor dental health and Dementia following over 5,500 elderly people over a period of 18 years. After the study concluded, it was found that those who kept poor oral hygiene (brushed less than once a day) were 65% more likely to develop Dementia than those who kept optimal oral health.

Another similar study found that periodontal disease-related bacteria were more pronounced in patients who had Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of Dementia, than those who didn’t have the illness.

The solution is prevention?

At Image Dental, we want you to know healthy teeth and gums don’t happen by accident, but are instead procured through investing time into them every day. A good oral hygiene routine consists of:

  • Brushing the teeth at least twice daily
  • Flossing once daily
  • Regular dental check-ups at 6 month intervals

Preventative dentistry is the first step at achieving optimal oral health, and can counteract issues such as plaque accumulation or periodontal disease.
