Oral Health and the Heart

A recent study in Sweden has found a link between the health of the mouth and the health of the heart

The discovery brought the spotlight to the direct relationship between cardiovascular disease, mainly coronary heart disease, and the number of missing teeth in the mouth.

Cardiovascular disease is a real risk; sweeping the globe the disease claims more than 17 million lives every year- a startling statistic. The breakthrough strengthened the hypothesis that infections and bacteria in the mouth can spread to the circulatory system, causing a low-grade chronic inflammation or infection, which is a known risk factor for heart disease.

Preventative dental care?

To achieve optimal health both orally and wholly, preventative dentistry is the optimal choice. A regular inspection of the mouth and checking the regime which the patient undertakes is an important facet of preventative dentistry. This can help to detect any early signs of periodontal disease and allow us to supply the right treatment for you.

Periodontal disease can be harmful

Periodontal (gum) disease is the leading cause of tooth loss, and is primarily triggered by poor dental hygiene. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is easy to treat and reverse. If left untreated gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, a much more severe gum disease.

It is imperative that periodontal disease be treated immediately to inhibit any bacteria growth or bone degeneration. We know you want to keep your teeth into old age, and at Image Dental, we can help you retain your natural teeth well into your 70?s and 80?s.
